"And as the raven flies she feels unwelcome
She's fallen out of her tree and caught on a limb of silver lining
Her wings uncertain oh but she's still flying
Yeah little Raven I see you there
Hold your head up now
I won't try and pull your feathers out I promise
Go on dry your eyes
You know that I've forgiven you and I'm sorry
And everything till now
It wasn't that bad really
Raven by Lisa Marie Presley
Just watched all five seasons of GG in the past two weeks. I’m so confused.
From what I’ve seen online, wayyyy before I ever even contemplated watching GG, there are incessant wars between Chair and Dair fans. Because of that, I watched GG knowing that Dair was going to happen eventually. One of the main things I’ve seen by Dair fans is that there was this supposed “build up” to them all throughout the show.
I’m sorry. I honestly thought Dair was the OTP of the show and started watching the show with them in mind. I actually looked for this “build up” before I even knew it existed. Sorry. It wasn’t there.
What I did see building for the entire show was Chair. I remember when the whole Chair thing first happened in the limo, I was so confused. Blair was all madly in love with Nate so it didn’t make sense. But then it started to make sense. And the more I watched, the more I realized why it made sense. Chair work. Dair fans want to bash and call Chuck this mad, crazy, abusive and controlling psycho. Um, have you met Blair? Granted, I adore her, but seriously. She is no angel and has done some DESPICABLE stuff. There were times when I swore to hate her for all eternity. But seriously.
Abusive? C’mon. Everyone knows Chuck would die for her in an instant. He punched the window because he was A: Drunk, B: In pain, C: Angry. No, it doesn’t make it okay. But he didn’t purposely get violent, and he would never do it again. He even apologized for it, something Chuck Bass never does.
All other bashing aside, someone please explain to me how Chuck and Blair didn’t work. When they were together circa S3, they were the cutest scheming team in the world. Breakfast in bed with plotting already on the brain. That’s supposedly what the Dair fans don’t like. That Blair gets all plotty and schemy with Chuck. Yeah, and she lights up for it. It makes her happy to exercise that control. It will always make her happy. That’s not something that comes out more with Chuck, it’s just part of who she is. I don’t see how people who call themselves fans of Blair would want to see her give up that side of herself.
Yes, Chuck and Blair have dark sides. Yes, they bring it out in each other. But it works for them. They don’t have to hide who they are with each other. ANY part of themselves. That was what didn’t work with Louis. Blair was pretending to be something she wasn’t. Even with Dan, she had to pretend that everything about his world was what she wanted.
Here’s the interesting thing. I’m not against Dair as a relationship. But as friends. I think Blair has always needed a person like Dan in her life. Serena has been her best friend her entire life, and let’s be honest, Serena is selfish and manipulative and would drop Blair to get something she really wanted. i.e. banging Dan in the finale just to try to prove a point. Blair has always needed a friend to see her as other than Queen B and actually listen to her, to indulge in her quirky interests and just be there for her. Dan is the perfect person for that. He cares about her, wants to see her happy, and can give her the shoulder and support she needs. Friends shouldn’t always become lovers, though.
I tried to like them. I did. Granted, I turned into a rabid Chair fan while watching the show, but I really wanted to see if the Dair arguments were valid and perhaps Chair was poisonous. What I found was the opposite. I see Dan and Blair as best friends, almost like siblings. It felt incestuous to watch them being romantic together. It felt… wrong almost. And it wasn’t because I personally want her with Chuck. It was just… it felt off. Watching them go at it in the elevator was almost disturbing to me.
Plus, with the knowledge of the way Chuck and Blair are about love and the way they guard themselves, the whole thing honestly felt like Blair was protecting herself. Dan felt like her shield. While it’s fine and dandy that she felt she was safe and protected with him, it’s not real love, and it’s certainly not the one she wants. Sure enough, in the finale, Serena confronted Blair and made her realize that she was still refusing to admit her feelings for Chuck. And I think it was because she had once, and it hurt her more than she could imagine. Opening herself up again to that, to becoming “vulnerable” as she put it, was too scary. Dan was a way to deflect it and put off actually dealing with the fact that she needed to set herself up for heartbreak with Chuck again. And forgive me, but personally, I believe that a great love is the one that should always threaten to destroy you.
Needless to say, I’m confused.
I’m honestly opening myself and my mind to Dair. I tried it and thought about it and it just doesn’t make sense to me. I see the pain that both Chuck and Blair have been through together and apart, and I still don’t see why people don’t see them as perfect. They are not perfect people alone, and they definitely won’t be together. Relationships are not meant to be perfect. I mean, yes, people are free to ship whomever they choose, but I honestly don’t get the wars between the ships. Stelena vs Delena I get. It just seems so incredibly one-sided when it comes to Chair vs Dair.
Before I watched the finale of S5 I had read the arguments by Dair fans claiming that their ship wasn’t over and they were still holding strong. I’m lost. Did I watch the same thing? Did Blair not declare her love to Chuck? Did she not say that the next time she said those words, it would be to the last person she’d ever say them to? Did she not ask Chuck to be her future? Did she not proclaim to Chuck that she would fight for him? Did she not promise to be all in? Because that was the finale of S5 I watched and I’m pretty sure that all about confirmed that Chair is endgame.
I’m not trying to start a war between ships, I’m just trying to understand why they exist in the first place. Everything in the past five seasons of GG has been pointing to Chair. Down to the very ideas that Chuck and Blair complete parts of each other that no one else ever can. They have always been drawn to each other and what they have while painful in the past, has only made them stronger as a couple. They have matured together, apart, and have learned what a real relationship needs to work—together. They have made each other better people. Dair, incestuous issues aside, I’m desperately trying to understand how people don’t see all of that and try to claim that is the better choice.
I’m fully open to a rebuttal, intelligent and well thought out, granted. But as I said, given the finale of S5 I witnessed, it seems pretty much case closed to me. I mean, Chuck has the ring back. And you know he’s never going to get rid of it. It seems like everything is falling into place. Blair is becoming her own woman, Chuck has finally learned what he needs to do to be a good man on his own…
Am I crazy? How, after all of this, can Dair fans still prefer Dan to Chuck to be with Blair? I honestly don’t get it.
